Murad Center @ Rustan's Makati (A Spa Connoisseur's Review)

Murad Center @ Rustan's Makati (A Spa Connoiser's Review)
November 05, 2010- After several sessions since my first visit in May here at Murad Makati and the results that I had since then was "hiyang" to my skin and noticed that I had less comedones (white heads), I bought a package for AHA Intensive worth 3,900 which is good for 4 facial treatments and a facial diamond peel session worth 1,700 Pesos. Today, I get to finish all my package. Salamat naman as I have to travel two hours before getting here in Makati everytime I would have a facial. As always, I was in the able hands of Tess and here is what I like about Tess:
1. She executes the best European type of facial I have ever had. (For those of you wondering what a European facial is read my blog below.)
2. She doesn't forget any facial technique. After going under the same facial treatments over and over again, I get to memorize the steps already. This is the advantage of having to work on one product only. In this case,  products of Dr. Murad. When I was working as a spa and facial therapist, we get to be bombarded with a host of product brands with different techniques and different applications, hindi mo na tuloy alam kung yung techniques na ginagamit mo eh tama pa ba dun sa produkto. You get confused because of the different techniques: one brand will have more than twenty techniques for a specific product line. Example a spa carries two brands (some spas even carry as much as five or more brands): Brand A has a product line for anti-aging which has a set of techniques for facial massage. Brand A also has a product line naman for pimple treatments again, having similar facial techniques for anti-aging but also has some differences. While Brand B carries five (or more) product lines: for men, for anti-aging, for pimple and problematic skin, for bleaching/whitening and for body treatments. All these have different facial techniques and applications. If you are a novice and you only have a short span to memorize, marami kang makakalimutan or maida-dagdag not Tess, she knows what to do and does it with flair.
3. Tess gives me samples of products for me to try. Today, I bought several products to take home with me for maintenance. I will edit this blog so I can get to review them as well.
4. She discusses the purpose of each product she applies which is already a given since they carry only Murad products.
5. She gives my lip a boost with the application of lip care product after every facial which I love because it tastes and smells like strawberries. It also instantly moisturizes a chapped lip like mine.

So there you go my latest blog about Murad in Rustan's, Makati.

May 16, 2010- After my two-hour long spa time at Island spa (yes, and I am still held hostage --happily---hehehe--- in this beauty and relaxation level of Rustan's) still at the 5th level of Rustan's) I still have an hour more to spare (1 hour and fifteen minutes to be exact) since Island spa does not have any facial and beauty treatments on their menu, the staff told me that I can hop off to the Murad Center just right in front of them. So, off I went. Facial therapies are a NEED for me not some want or just my bling-bling thing. I will tell you why in a bit.

Location and Ambiance

Again if you are coming from the Greenbelt area, the location is quite difficult to find (no wonder I can only see a few people coming upstairs). It's just right in front of the coffee shop. Upon entering, on your left will be the reception area and to the right is the lounge area. The whole facade of the place befits a medical spa facility (good for branding and the type of client they want to attract) with most of their retail products available for sale displayed at the lounge area which has a small sala/receiving area. No distinct smell or any background sound at all. This place is not a full service spa but a skin, face and beauty center.

Hygiene, Cleanliness and Sanitation

Upon first glance, you will notice that the place is impeccably clean but the room which was where I have been given my facial, was dimly lit so I have not way of telling if the place was the same. Their changing area was also clean. My locker has a big robe and slippers.

Menu of Services

They have facial and body treatment services. Sorry for those wanting to have a massage and a facial therapy in just one roof, this is a beauty center not a full service spa. So here are some of their services:

For facial treatments they have the following:

The least expensive which is 900 pesos (approximately $18) is Classical Facial-30 minutes- a customized cleansing treatment with mask and moisturizing treatment.

The staff assessed my skin/face and recommended an AHA Intensive facial (60 minutes)- so I obliged- this facial uses AHA in this case, it's glycolic acid, very good choice for my skin type because even if I do not have pimples or acne, I have white heads (comedones) and this really bothers me and the primary reason I have to make facial therapies one of my regimen. This costs 1,900 Pesos (approximately U$D38).

Vitamin C infusion Facial- 60 minutes- this costs 1,700 pesos (approximtely U$D 34) -to restore elasticity, firmness and hydration and even skin tone using pure Vitamin C.

Resurgence Renewal Facial- 60 minutes- costs 2,400 pesos (approximately U$D 48)- for hormonal aging skin, menopausal and peri-menopausal skin.

Clarifying enzyme facial- 60 minutes- costs 1,700 Pesos (approximately U$D 34)- ideal for oily and acne prone skin using papaya and pineapple natural fruit enzymes to dissolve these impurities.

Diamond Peel starts at 1,700 Pesos for the face (approximately U$D34) and 1,700 Pesos (approximately U$D 34) for full neck and decollete.

For "bacne" beakouts they have a clarifying enzyme back treatment- 60 minutes- for 1,800 pesos (approximately 35U$D). So if you plan to go backless in one of the formal occasions that you will go to, visit Murad for this treatment at least several days or months before the ocassion depending on the severity of your "bacne" breakouts.
For those wanting to firm and tone their body, they have Vitamin C Firm and Tone Half body treatment- 60 minutes- for 2,200 pesos (approximately U$D 44)

If I were near, I would avail of their packages:

3 Facial treatments for just 3,800 Pesos giving you a savings of 2,100 pesos from the regular price of 5,700 pesos and they have other treatment packages which you can inquire about when you call.

Price-wise, the Murad Center has reasonable price figures (as compared with US-price standards) but for others it might be ridiculously expensive, but Murad is a huge name so I suppose that's a given. If you can afford the price tag, or just want an occasional treat, I think as my first impression, they are doing a service more than average. I think you do have to make the decision if you want quality at a price. Murad offers quality products and a more than average service, but you have to be willing to pay for them.

They accept credit cards for payment which is a good thing.

Retail and Products

Dr. Murad believes in an inclusive approach and following the 3-step Murad method, I would be incorporating topical, internal and emotional care into my lifestyle. So, if I were to take home products, I would take home the following and try them out:
Topical- AHA cream- which has to be left on the face for 10 minutes- but as unique as my face is- I think I need more than 20 minutes for this....hehehe...maybe one of these days I will experiment with their products. Later will tell you why I need 20 minutes to start with.
Internal- Youth Builder dietary supplement- costs around 4,500 pesos (U$D 90) good for 30 days already.
Staff and Decorum

When I arrived, the reception was manned by a male but when he greeted me and I asked him about the facial he excused himself and disappeared into the back door and a lady entertained me instead. The lady staff (sorry as related earlier I chose to lay my pen and just rest and enjoy my spa-ing time without having to think about writing a consumer's review through my blog so I was not able to get the name of the esthetician) was accommodating naman and I tried to converse with her during my session and asked questions. She is not pushy with products and well-versed when it comes to what the products are for.

Session and Techniques

The staff ushered me to a changing/locker area and since I am (again) the only one inside the spa, I get to enjoy the facility all by myself. The changing facility has at least 8-14 lockers with keys. There is a facial tube dress inside, so you have to change because the facial therapy includes the shoulders and chest area. There are also toiletries inside like a hair gel, a comb/hair brush and a hair spray.

The AHA intensive facial I tried is a type of European facial. You might wonder what is a European facial? This is a type of facial treatment which begins with deep cleansing, steam, exfoliation, and facial massage of the face, shoulders, and chest area, followed by special mask that hydrates the skin. One thing I like about this facial is that she also applied lip balm on my lips at the end of the facial. Aside from the skin treatments, you get soothing massages on your temples, scalp, neck and shoulders.

My skin was noticeably smooth, even-toned and radiant for days until now - and it's been more than 7 days!. Actually, I think I will be trying some of their products when I come back. This is the main reason why I need to have regular facials because I have to maintain a smooth complexion (not the usual smooth complexion) and I am bothered whenever I can feel that I already have rough skin because of white heads (comedones). I tried glycolic acid peels- but it works only temporarily. I have a lot of these white heads or comedones that its like having mustache on my skin.... and I still am on the hunt for the right product for me. So far, have found none as effective as the products were at Murad.

The products (not the facial techniques or the spa ritual) has exceeded all the other places I have gone for my facials- both relatively cheap and super expensive. Not that the spa or the staff is average, it's just that the facial techniques used and the ritual is common and a given. I hope the spa or facial owners will learn from these types of establishments and get some ideas from them. Although I have to say that it's kinda weird because during the steam and application of the AHA, I expected the facialist (or aesthetician) to use this time to give me a back, neck, and shoulder massage, or a hand massage- but in this case, it did not happen. Maybe, it's not part of the ritual?

I also highly recommend this AHA Intensive facial for those who have the same skin problems that I have. I love the scents of their products- not overly scented but has a nice smelling scent for the AHA and for the cleansers.

I was also in a hurry so this might be the reason why the staff did not ask me for any hot tea or any herbal tea at all....or since they are a medical spa facility, they also do not include that?

Overall rating, because of the superb products, I will give Murad Center @ Rustan's an 85%. I will definitely try out other services and take home some products when I come back

Island Spa @ Rustan's Makati (A Spa, Massage Therapy Review from a Spa Connoisseur)

Island Spa @ Rustan's Makati (A Spa and Massage Therapy Review from a Spa Connoisseur)
by Eunice
yunesa@yahoo.com

November 05, 2010- What is different about my visit today at Island spa?
1. Towels- Obviosuly, hindi sila nag titipid ng towels. I love the warm towels applied on my back during the session and afterwards: application of warm towels on my arms, legs and foot.
2. The ginger tea they offered. Refreshing and delicious.
3. The therapist kept on asking to be excused everytime someone is at the reception area because they lack staff.
4. I have taken photos of the nice room we were in.

Here you go my latest thoughts on Island spa.

May 06, 2010- I was at Greenbelt 4 Makati and was aching for another spa-ing or "me" time. Although I only have three hours to spare, I opted to shop for another spa that I can blog about and hopefully, it would be worth blogging about (hehehe). I have been in and out of many spas, facial and beauty centers but one of my weakness is having to sit down and write my thoughts while I am enjoying my session. You have to agree with me that its diffucult to write your thoughts and enjoy the session at the same time. Mahirap kaya yun. But for this day, I chose to give myself a break, just relax and take it easy on my writing. It is worthy to note that prior to this consumer review I have already visited different spas but do not intend to write about it (yet) because I am giving them the chance to improve their services as they did not pass (in my personal opinion) professional standards of what a real or authentic spa is like. So instead of blurting out my disgust (or yelp about it), I will choose to be quiet and hunt for spas, massage clinics and wellness centers that are worthy of blogging about. Hopefully in the near future when I return to these spas, massage clinics and wellness center establishments they would have improved and perhaps that would be the time when I could blog about it.

Since the old spa (near a gym) where I frequent to whenever I am in Greenbelt is now closed and have transferred to another location, I promtly asked from the concierge for the nearest spa and they said it is located at the 5th level of Rustan's Department store, the Island Spa. Okay, so off I went to this upper level of Rustan's to venture into my spa cravings. As geographically challenged as I am, the location is quite difficult to find if you are coming from the Greenbelt area. Its also right near Belo Medical Group's center- maybe next time I will visit Belo instead.

Location and Ambiance

The location is quite difficult to find (no wonder I can only see a few people coming upstairs) . The ambiance is Thai-themed but amidst the Thai ambiance, their services do not include a Thai massage. It's called a spa but in reality, it's not a spa but a massage clinic or center as they do not offer any spa services only massage therapies. They also call their establishment Island spa but do not include different types of island-ish massage therapies. So much for branding huh?

I like the peppermint-ish scent of the candle when I entered and the serene atmosphere, realizing that we are on the fifth level and only a very few people are seen on this side of the mall. The ambiance is more relaxing than that of spas located in SM malls. The ambiance of the whole small floor where these medical spas and beauty centers are located emanates an aura of elegance and exclusivity. Good for those who would like to take a nap during their session. The big minus is that Island Spa do not have any toilets or wash rooms inside their massage center so when I asked where the toilet is at, they said you have to go outside of Island spa and walk a couple of feet away just right beside the alley around the Belo Medical group- so I asked the staff  "are there times where clients would ask to be excused for a bladder break wearing the spa robe?" and they said "yes ma'am- the guards outside know that you came from here- so no problem you can go to the bathroom" but for me (personally speaking) it's kinda awkward because you have to pass by the clinic of Belo and a coffee shop where people are taking "tea time". Oh well, luckily for me, during that time I do not have to take a bladder break until after my session was over.

Another disadvantage is that the rooms are separated only by open partitions so if there are a lot of clients simultaneously taking their session and one client happens to be a blabber- naku lagot- everyone will be able to eavesdrop from their conversation. But good thing I went right after lunch time (around 1 pm) so there isn't one client except me- so I have the privilege of having the spa all by myself.

I like that the flooring in between the rooms are made of stones and makes it appeal like you are not inside a mall but in a resort spa somewhere in Thailand.

I also like the back ground sound and music, soothing and similar to old Chinese themes.

Hygiene, Cleanliness and Sanitation

The sheets seem to be clean as the massage recliners are all covered in white and does not seem to have any funny smell. Generaly hygiene and cleanliness passed my standards. The toilets outside the Island spa is clean and neat- as we expect from upscale mall spas around the city.

The Menu of Services

When I looked at their services they have the following in their menu and the prices are very reasonable:
1. Chinese Therapeutic Foot Massage starting at 30 minutes duration for only 375 Pesos to 2 hours for 1,115 pesos (approximately U$D22). I wonder how many techniques there are for a 30 minutes and a two hour session (?). Maybe next time when I am within the vicinity, I will be able to try this one out.

2. Foot and Back Massage for 1 hour and 15 minutes = 800 pesos (approximately U$D16.00). Come to think of it, I should have chosen this as my back and shoulders were stiff that time (as it always was)...hehehe...

3. Full Body Massage which is composed of Swedish and Shiatsu techniques. They have one hou, 1.5 hours and two hours valued at 690 pesos (approximately U$D14), 970 pesos (approximately U$D20) and 1,190 pesos (approximately U$D24) consecutively.

4. Aromatherapy massage priced at 1,145 pesos (approximately U$D 23) for 1.5 hours.

5. Hot Stone Massage priced at 1,200 pesos (approximately U$D24) for 1.5 hours.

6. Foot and body combination at 1.150 pesos (approximately U$D23) for 2 hours- this one was what the staff recommended so I took it. because I am that greedy about massage as I am greedy about taking the knots out of my shoulders and back.

7. Express Back Massage at 375 pesos (approximately U$D8) for 30 minutes- this is the cheapest/least expensive massage they offer.

They also offer coupon booklets for five thousand and ten thousand pesos (approximately U$D100 to U$D 200) which contains 10 and 20 pieces of marked down prices coupons for massage. So if you already are their loyal client and you live near the area, I suggest you go for this value coupons. All in all, their menu is limited to massage therapy, do not expect any spa services even if they claim to be a spa, they do not have any hydrotherapy services or even remotely spa-ish services. Technically, this is not considered a spa but a massage center or massage clinic.

They accept credit cards for payment which is a good thing.

Staff and Decorum

The front desk and staff were nice and helpful. She also asked me if I would have my tea in my room or in the reception vis a vis lounge area. Someone also assisted me when I got lost trying to find the comfort room outside....hehehe....I told you, I am geographically challenged.

The massage therapist assigned to me was also accommodating. But she should go beyond the basic motions of the massage and actually work with your individual body to help not only relax but work towards healing you. They should be receptive to your personal preferences and needs. For someone like me, whose back is filled with really intense knots and carries a ton of stress around, this sort of attention and care is absolutely imperative.

Massage session and techniques

Since I choose Foot and Body Massage combination here is what I experienced:

The staff ushered me to a small room with a recliner for massage and then asked me to change and put on the robe and shorts, she then prepared the foot soak while I was changing then started with an herbal foot soak. Literally it has leaves on the foot soak and I like the feeling because of the hot tub of water with soothing herbs. It was similar to an herbal foot rub I experienced in Thailand except that in Thailand they do not put plastic or cellophane on their foot spa machines. Here the foot spa machine was covered with cellophane/plastic for ease and convenience of cleaning it up afterwards. While soaking my feet for five minutes or so, she also placed a warm massage pillow on my shoulders, making me start the session with ease and comfort. The warm pillow smelled like guava leaves though and I like the smell. The usual massage techniques that were used was nothing exemplary. It took around 30 to 45 minutes all in all. If you are well-versed with massage techniques, this is just an ordinary foot and leg massage nothing more to it.
Then came the time for the body massage proper. She asked me to stand up first while she moved the recliner downwards and put on the face rest. Then I was set to go for my body massage. She started with my legs upwards to other parts of the body. The feeling that it's systematic but not personalized. For me (as a massage therapist myself and a spa consultant), I am very particular about massage therapists who listen to the body's muscle movements while they knead. Its not only the spa or massage ritual that counts. They have to listen to the body not just execute techniques. Overall, the massage was just okay nothing exemplary. It's a combination of Swedish and Shiatsu massage with a bit of stretching.

What I like about the session though is the application of hot pack on my back while massaging on the supine position what I do not like is that I have to rise up and about again for her to be able to change the recliner suited for a supine position.

Carica Mangosteen Super Blend and Noni Juice and Fruit Extract Consumer Review

Carica Mangosteen Super Blend
and
Noni Juice and Fruit Extract Review
By
Eunice

I don’t know about you but I have not been taking antibiotics for more than five years now simply because my tummy hurts also I found our that antibiotics in the long run produces a lot of side effects. So I might as well try herbal remedies. Since then, to my surprise, naging “hiyang” ako. Although the Department of Health promotes some herbal remedies (Sampung Halamang Gamot when Sen. Flavier was the DOH Secretary that time) and herbal concoctions through its office, The Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care hindi talaga openly na pinapayo ng mga doktor sa mga tao to take herbal medicines mainly due to lack of scientific research but we have heard of testimonials that speak otherwise. Hindi natin na re-realize it just suppresses the symptoms. Anyway, hindi ako nandito to discuss which is right and wrong, it’s ultimately your choice but for me, Science should work hand in hand with nature. Para maka-save ng maraming buhay. I believe that the closer any product is to its natural state mas effective at mas maganda sa katawan.

Since then, I experimented, researched and taken some herbal remedies. Para alam ko mismo which works for me and which doesn’t. Because what might work for Juan might not work for me. Hindi naman ibig sabihin na pag hindi hiyang sa akin eh hindi na effective yun it just so happens na hindi lang talaga effective sa akin pero it might be effective sa iba. Of course, as an informed consumer I would do my own homework before taking anything kasi hindi naman porke herbal and natural eh maganda na sa atin depende pa rin yan sa reaksiyon ng katawan natin sa mga tina-take nating gamot. So for this blog review I will write about two herbal-based products of Carica Herbal Health products, a local manufacturer of herbal and natural food supplements. They have kiosks and branches nationwide from SM malls to Robinsons malls. They are also open for franchise as I know. This company was started by Mr. Ramon Tan, an herbalist and one person that I admire. I personally met him at their Buendia office last year but before that I have been taking Carica herbal products. Lagi rin siyang naririnig sa DZAS AM station morning talk sa segment nilang KKK. I am inspired by what he talks about together with the hosts of the program sometimes with Heidi Bernardo Sampang and Pastor Eric Maliuat kasi during the segment Mr. Ramon Tan is always promoting Philippine products and herbs directly sourced dito sa Pilipinas. Biro mo hindi naman kaila sa atin na we are really very very rich in agricultural products pero nag-i-import pa rin tayo ng maraming medicines? What an irony ano po? Noon naitanong ko nga sa aking spa supervisor that time bakit kailangan pa tayong mag import ng mga facial products and massage oils eh ang dami-dami namang raw materials dito sa atin? At ang sabi niya, to this effect, “eh kasi walang tayong advancement in science and technology to harness, develop and process our raw materials while ang ibang bansa meron”. Hummm….There could be some truth in it and I am not sure kung totoo yun or hindi but sad to say, a lot of the spa products especially yung high-end spa products are sourced outside of the Philippines. For high end products, marami diyan gawang France and US yung medyo low-end gawang China. When I say high-end it means yung mga mamahalin at yung low end naman yung medyo mura and presyo.

Anyway, going back to my review, I have tried some of Carica Herbal products and there are only two that I would blog about here. Ito yung Mangosteen Superblend and yung Carica Noni Juice and Fruit Extract. I do not have any comparison to make. Basi is fermented sugar cane branch extract made into local wine called “Basi”. I like the Mangosteen Superblend better kasi it’s more on the sweeter side. I researched din kasi ano ang effect ng Mangosteen and this fruit has shown to have high concentrations of anti-oxidants at very effective anti-aging fruit. Hehehe…ayan sabi ko na nga ba eh kailangan ko nito. Anyway, when I started taking it, I feel better in my tummy (kasi may gastritis ako) pero secret lang natin ha? Ang magaling daw talaga sa ulcer at gastritis eh yung santol bark na pinakuluan. Mapakla daw pero talagang mabisa sa ulcer. Maybe subukan ko rin ito…What did I feel after taking it for a week? Mas naging maganda ang pakiramdam ko sa stomach ko.

A 250 ml ng Mangosteen Superblend costs Php 440.00 Pesos (approximately $8.80). Based on the label, the Mangosteen Superblend contains 40% ng Mangosteen Puree, Noni juice na 30% at Carica juice na 30%. It should be taken 1 tablespoon before breakfast. Repeat if needed in mid-afternoon and before going to bed.

Yung Carica Noni Juice and Fruit Extract na 120 ml is Php 165.00 Pesos (approximately $3.30). 50% daw is Noni juice, Grape juice is 30%, Berry extract is 15% at Pineapple juice 5%. Ahhh…kaya pala mas maasim ito. It should be taken 1-2 Tablespoons a day on an empty stomach.

Siguro dapat isama rin ng Carica ang training for their franchisees and their staff para mas effective sila in recommending their products. Kasi alam ko magaganda naman ang products nila eh kaya internal staff training will go a long long way. Para sana mas may uniformity dapat magkaroon sila ng exhaustive training for all their personnel and staff para iisa ang sagot. Anyway, that is on the operations and management side na eh. Kasi sa spa yun ang tinatawag nating spa ritual. May uniformity ang lahat ng ginagawa, nasa standard operating procedures or SOP naman yun eh.

Carica herbal products have herbal soaps (some of it, I tried na like the herbal white soaps) and Carica shampoo, Herbal dental care toothpaste which I all like naman. Cost is no more than 200 pesos (approximately $4.00). Although mabango rin ang Carica soaps mas mababango nga lang yung soaps ng Soap Opera and Lush! pero mas mura ng konti ang Carica soaps. I have a blog about Soaps, Bathing and Lush Soaps at this link http://yunesa.blogspot.com/2009/08/soap-opera-consumer-review.html

I bought both products sa Sonsea herbal shop ng Carica sa SM Fairview. This is where I normally buy any Carica products. Their marketing office is located at 2628 Dian st. corner Buendia in Makati City with telephone number 5218783 or 5235603. You can email them at caricaphil@yahoo.com and website at http://www.caricaworldwide.com.ph/

The Soap Opera Consumer Review

The Soap Opera Bath Shop Consumer Review
By
Eunice Estipona

We had a heavy snow storm the night before and the next winter morning, I was happily approaching the front desk of the hotel where I was working that time as a spa manager with my hair all wet from my usual daily bathing routine before going to work. In the Philippines, it’s common to see Filipinas walking around the streets with our hair still wet or should I say damp. Anyway, it was around 10:00 o’clock in the morning and the receptionist on duty that time looked at me with a querying eye and as I approached her, without hesitation she asked “Eunice, why is your hair wet?” to which I answered abruptly “Ohhh, everyday we Filipinas used to take a bath morning and evening before going to bed” and I think I shocked her because she covered her pretty red lips (which were now widely open) with her hand and replied with an endearing tone, “Ohh crazy Filipina!” The conversations that followed were: “No, bathing is already a part of our culture, why? how often do you take a bath?” to which the concierge replied that “we take a bath only twice a week depending on the climate”. I was pretty stunned I can feel my eyes widen and my jaw dropped but soon realized that bathing in itself is also a cultural thing. Filipinos are known to take a bath everyday and shower by night (At least in general). Americans are known to take a shower everyday before going to work. When Americans say they took a shower, it means they took a bath. Bathing and showering for them is the same while for Filipinos bathing and showering are two different things. For Filipinos, bathing means whole body cleaning, including shampoo, conditioner and scrubbing (hilod) while if a Filipino says “to shower” it means whole body cleaning EXCLUDING the hair. Again, we have to accept our diversities. But suffice to say, Filipinos love bathing and water. Kaya nga hit na hit sa atin yung maligo sa ulan kasi we love water, usong uso rin yung mga spa eh kasi it offers water therapies and we are blessed to have plenty of those surrounding our 7,100 ++ wonderfully crafted islands. So in this regard, I will start blogging about my bathing experience using soaps that I bought from Soap Opera in comparison with other soaps that I have used na.

The first product that I am going to blog about was the one I bought last July 2009 at their SM Fairview branch 2/F right in front of the Watson’s Personal Care store was just accidental. I was really looking for a soap that will effectively remove my blemish on my arms (if there is one) kasi nga a few months ago I scratched my arms but unfortunately whenever I itch from insect bites and scratch myself hay naku…..I do not stop until it bleeds. Hehehe… According to the sales personnel the Power Whitening Glutathione, which smells like their body scrub is good for blemishes daw. She demonstrated pa nga how the body scrub affects my skin by trying it on my hand. Unfortunately, I am still using another brand that I bought from Rustan’s. Maybe next time, I said to her. I was there just to try out if there is really a soap that can take away these small spots. According to the soap’s label, the power whitening contains Glutathione and Arbutin bath soap, a powerful and healthy skin lightener with age reducing agents. Cost is one hundred and fifty pesos (Php 150.00 or approximately $3.00) for a 110 grams sabi ng label (according to the label). It’s color white and it smells really refreshing eh pag ako pa naman naliligo at gusto kong mag bleach, I spend no less than 10 minutes of “affair” with my Loofah and soap. I cannot compare or describe how it smells but it smells nice like a combination of flowers. You see, bathing is a luxurious treat for me too! It’s kinda like a therapy kasi nga sa smell pa lang very refreshing na. I always look for a soap that smells good like an Aromacology or aromatherapy. Something that would tickle my nasal sensitivities. Yung para bang as if nasa spa ka. Hay sarap! Come to think of it, the Lord has given us the sense of smell and touch to be enjoyed altogether. We are refreshed and rejuvenated by the sense of smell but we also get sick pag hindi maganda yung naaamoy natin na puro chemicals di ba? Or mabahong amoy. I love trying different types of products in the market especially the natural soaps. But I do not buy (rarely if ever) yung mga soaps na walang amoy kasi nga ang prinsipiyo ko is that dapat you smell nice (but not too strong) once you get out of the shower. Unlike the natural soaps that I tried sa Lush! Which I buy from Greenbelt in Makati I noticed, that Lush’s soaps are very soft soaps especially when wet and therefore mas madaling matunaw. The last time I bought from them was several months ago kasi nga malayo at hindi naman ako madalas sa Makati area. But whenever I go within the Makati district especially Greenbelt, I would drop by the Lush! Branch in Greenbelt. But I noticed that although I both like the soaps of Soap Opera and Lush, Soap Opera’s soaps are harder and less expensive. Therefore, if you are looking for a lower-priced item and alternative Soap Opera will give you more value for your money. As a critic sometimes I cannot help but compare. But do not get me wrong, Lush soaps although more expensive are also okay if you have the budget for it.

According to their website http://www.soapoperabathshop.com/ , this Glutathione and Arbutin pure ingredient Bath Soap, gives a safe and double-powered whitening action. Enriched with super powerful & widely acclaimed whitening ingredients for a smoother and younger looking skin. Naturally takes out age spots. My question is how many days or months do I need to use the soap for me to see the effects? And how long per bath? As Science reveals that Glutathione tablets are effective only when taken for more than 30 days consecutively depending on your skin tone. So the darker your skin is, the longer you have to wait for the Glutathione to take effect. It takes time and maraming babaran sa banyo.

Based on my experience with this soap, it has really lightened my scratches but you need to spend 15 minutes a day scratching the suds of the soap using a Loofa. What I normally do is cut the soap in two equal portions and use one half at a time. I already finished the whole soap which lasted for approximately 10 days of consecutive daily twice a day bathing. To compute to your monthly expenses using Soap Opera’s soaps, you will be consuming three bars of 110 grams of soap (their regular size) a month and it will cost you 450 pesos (approximately $9.00) for the thirty days. Take note that this will vary widely on how often you use it, for how long per bath and how many people would use it in the household. Siyempre mas marami kayong gagamit mas madaling maubos.

Then I also bought the soap called The Bomb but have just used it today. This soap is a clear soap with light green color, it also weighs approximately 110 grams and contains Glutathione, Vitamin C, Calamansi Placenta and Collagen. According to the label, this soap, The Bomb has strong skin whitening agents which smoothens skin and erases blemishes. It has effective anti-aging effects. It costs Php 150.00 pesos (approximately $3.00). It smells like one of the Skittles candies. Feels like mint. Very soothing to the senses. I will certainly buy another bar of this soap kasi very minty yung feeling and smell niya. You might want to taste it (but don’t). Hahaha…. Come to think of it are there any edible soaps out there? I heard that there are, shoot me an email or send me a note where I can buy edible soaps. I want to try it out. Please…….

I also bought the soap called Bedazzled containing Glutathione, Hyaluronic Acid and Oxygen (puwede na pala na ilagay sa soap ang oxygen in what form kaya, kasi ang alam ko ang Oxygen is in its gaseous state, is it possible to mix gas and solid? Hummm….I wonder if their claim is really true.). It’s another clear soap, flesh in color, approximately 110 grams and costs 150.00 (approximately $3.00) pesos. It says in its label that it combats the visible signs of aging by nourishing your skin and takes away fine lines and wrinkles through its advance age-defying action. Brightens your skin tone (?). Itong claim na ito, I placed a question mark after it because is there such thing as brightening a skin tone or in Tagalog language pagpapa-tingkad ng kulay ng balat? So kung brown ka mas lalong titingkad ang pagka kulay brown mo? Or pag white ka lalong titingkad ang pagka-puti mo? Hum…..I think they should start editing what they print on their labels as I noticed halos pareho lang ingredients ng lahat ng nabili kong soaps, Anyway, I will not be able to say something other than it smells like a toilet fragrance and when its wet and applied all over the body nawawala na yung amoy.

Important tip: You have to ask which soaps are offered on sale and try them out first. Instead of 150.00 Pesos ($3.00) they just sell it for 100 pesos each (approximately $2.00). Still way more expensive than the usual Dove soaps in the supermarket. Speaking of Dove soap, what I don’t like about Dove is the greasy after feel when I use them but then again it’s my personal preference I like the squeaky clean feeling after a bath. I do not like to feel oily after bathing that is why I was glad when they came out with several Dove variants like the Fresh energizing beauty bar with lemon grass where only light moisturizing lotion were added with beads and a sparkling scent of grapefruit and lemongrass. I am using it from time to time and it doesn’t feel greasy or too oily. But then again, Dove soaps are good for those skin types which need to be moisturized and for people who would like a lotion after-feel without having to apply lotion. It’s also a soft soap so don’t let it stay soaked.

Bath Shops of Soap Opera are located in a few SM malls in Metro Manila including SM Fairview, Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM Marikina and Market! Market!.

Overall rating for Soap Opera 89%, Lush! 85% and Dove 83%.

Before I end this consumer review some words of wisdom regarding bathing: Bathing experts reveal that the right way to take a bath is for at least 20 (twenty) minutes (minimum), you must either soak or read in the bathroom, but should not begin the rinsing process until that period of time has elapsed. Slow baths are definitely advised, hurried baths will leave you soar and irritable. But be careful not to stay in the bath past the point at which you become noticeably pruney or otherwise known as water-aging (ito yung nag kukulubot na yung skin ng fingers mo parang pasas hindi ubas), this diminishes the experience. And last but not the least, do not let anything interrupt your bathing experience.

Happy bathing!

Let's Face It! SM Fairview Branch

Let’s Face It! at SM Fairview Branch
By
Eunice
yunesa@yahoo.com

Today, I will be reviewing Let’s Face It! Salon located at the lower ground floor of
SM City Fairview, Quezon City. I have tried other braches but this branch is the one I frequently visit because it’s near my place and I already feel at home here. I started coming to this facial salon more than seven years ago when they were still located at the UG/F level of SM City Fairview and their area was smaller compared to the bigger area they have today. I tried almost all their facial therapies before including the anti-aging, whitening/bleaching, pimple treatment, etc. Today they condensed their facial therapy menu choices to only one where you can choose only facial therapy. This comes with vacuum and the commonly termed LASER but is in fact a high frequency machine. You will also be entitled to two FREE facial massages and pricking within ten days afterwards. After the ten days is up, you are no longer entitled to a free facial massage and pricking. For today’s visit, July 22, 2009, I will have facial cleaning and massage.

Let us first talk about their services and prices. I will also add some of the experiences I’ve had through the years with the services mentioned. The cost of a facial cleaning is only Php 245.00 (Approximately $4.90). Again, this comes with the commonly termed LASER but is in fact a high frequency machine and a vacuum. Plus, two FREE facial massage and pricking within ten days afterwards. After the ten days is up, you are no longer entitled to a free facial massage and pricking. If you want an additional mask, they have several types: the powdered mask which is diluted in water and applied on your face, starts at Php 125.00 (Approximately $2.50); Soft mask starts at Php 225.00 (Approximately $4.50) the Moor facial mask is Php 900.00 (Approximately $18.00) Moor facial mask is a black odorless mask also diluted with a special Moor dilution procedure and liquid not with an ordinary distilled water, this is generally sourced out in Hungary and is not available in Supermarkets but available for in-house use of facial salons and spas, it is imported thus the higher price; Gel Masks are all priced at Php 620.00 (Approximately $12.40) I am not an avid gel mask (or paper mask) client because I do not like the feeling na malagkit (goo-ey feeling); Peel Off mask starts at Php 650.00 ($13.00).

Other service price and offerings: They also have advanced laser which is the real LASER starting at Php 620.00 (Approximately $13.00) where the facialist or facial therapist would literally cover her eyes with a dark colored eye protector glass and an emitted light wave will come out of a tiny little hole. You can request to adjust it for your preference like in my case, I would often ask it to be adjusted to anti-aging; Eyebag treatment starts at Php 225.00 (Approximately $4.50); Diamond Peel/ Microdermabrasions starts at Php 900.00 (Approximately $18.00) what I like about their Diamond Peel is that only a supervisor would perform it and the Supervisor who performs it does it meticulously. I also like that my skin really feels smooth and soft to touch right after. But be forewarned that microdermabrasion, although not invasive is not advisable for everyone especially if you have sensitive skin or your occupation is in the field and you will be exposed to the sun afterwards as these conditions are contraindicated; Herbal Whitening Body Scrub prices depends on what part of the body will be treated lowest priced is the Underarm which is Php 485.00 (Approximately $9.70) and the highest priced is Php 1,680.00 (Approximately $33.60) per session but they do offer a package good for eight (8) sessions costing only Php 11,650.00 (Approximately $233.00); Body scrubs starts at Php 510.00 (Approximately $10.20) for a sea salt scrub and all the others like coffee, milk and honey, whitening Spirulina scrub costs Php 560.00 (Approximately $11.20); There are only two Body Wraps available the Seaweed wrap costing only Php 510.00 (Approximately $10.20) and Spirulina costs Php 560.00 (Approximately $11.20). For body scrubs and wraps- there is nothing fancy about their services here just the standard but both are a great treat for moisturizing your skin all over. I do not mind being scrubbed and wrapped as all their staff are professional and have been trained on how to cover private areas, but be forewarned that its kinda cold inside the room and gets colder as you get yourself wet; Chest and Back Cleaning are also available starting at a price of Php 510.00 (Approximately $10.20); Body Massage is also available starts at Php 450.00 (Approximately $9.00) for an hour. There is only one type of Body Massage that they offer, which is a combination of Swedish and Shiatsu Massage which we will talk more about later; Hand Care services like Manicure starts at Php 120.00 (Approximately $2.40), hand spa at Php 280.00 (Approximately $5.60) they also offer hand spa, hand paraffin, etc. while foot care like pedicure starts at Php 130.00 (Approximately $2.60), they also offer foot spa, foot massage (30 minutes including a dry massage of the head and back) which is priced at Php 280.00 (Approximately $5.60), foot and leg paraffin, etc.; Other dermatological services (which I have not tried) includes Botox, Sclerotherapy, Mole Excision, Glutathione Injections, etc. Their Cosmetic surgery services include: Tumescent Liposuction, Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty, Breast Augmentation, etc. Unfortunately you will not be able to see any description of their services in the menu only a price list is available so you will have to call or ask the receptionist on-site who is well-versed with their services. I have not tried any of their Cosmetic surgery services kasi nga ang prinsipiyo ko eh bakit ko pa babaguhin ang binigay ng Diyos? (why will I change what God has given me?) So, as much as possible, iwas na iwas ako sa anything that is surgical in nature. Anyway, setting that topic aside basta takot ako mga ganyang types ng pagpapaganda. (Recently there has been a surge of patients who have experienced infection due to cosmetic surgery. Even on TV there has been a complaint from one of the patients of Dr. Vicky Belo, etc. So, as much as possible, I avoid anything that is surgical in nature)

Let’s Face It! used to have a beauty Card for loyal clients but it was phased out. I wonder why.

Through the years, while seeking for the right facial therapist for me, every time I visit Let’s Face It! I would try different staff. A handful of them are lousy, a few are just a so-so but I found these three staff very good in what they do. Although of course, they still have differences in touch, personality and technique execution. Let us talk about these three exemplary staff: Connie Parilla Callanza or Connie for short, Lovella Mangahan or Love for short and Cherry Pie de Leon or Pie for short. I started trying out numerous staff as well when they used to be located upstairs before I settled with Connie. The first and foremost thing I like about Connie is that she is friendly and the first thing I noticed about Connie was she did not forget my shoulder massage while I was waiting for my mask to dry up. During the first few years that I was trying almost all of their services, deep in my heart, I would always look for someone who does the shoulder and back massage- someone who has the hands for it. And, I found that in Connie. Besides, she is the first one who really took the time to ask me questions relevant to my skin’s needs without being too pushy as they are also promoting their retail product line. I also liked Cherry Pie or Pie for short because she is sweet-voiced, she also has the touch similar to Connie. I also like Love (short for Lovella) because all three of them are friendly and that they do not forget the massage portion after the pricking is over. This is very important for me because pricking time is painful so I am looking forward for the relaxing part. So, as you can notice, I know the staff by name, if one is not available I can choose another- by request. You can request someone to do the service for you, if they are available at the time of your visit. The three of them will also take the time to really clean your face- not that my face is “needy” but I felt that the three of them will take the time to clean and relax at the same time without hurriedly finishing the session up unless (in some occasions) I told them to as I am the one who is in a hurry.

Let us delve into talking about the general feel and ambiance of the place. I love the reception area because it’s not too cramped up. At the side are retail display and what I love about their counter top is that it has white stones on the bottom making the reception area look relaxing and inviting. I also like that behind the counter is a running water on a transparent glass of Let’s Face It! Salon Model and Logo. The towels used by clients are not disposable but you will get a clean and laundered towel. There were times when laundry was not able to deliver on time so they would make me use tissue instead. They will ask you first to wash your face in the sink area. This area has three sinks available which has an inviting atmosphere but I noticed that one of the three sinks is almost always out of order every time I visit. There are also hair brushes and comb available in the corner, just in case. But of course, I bring my own. The area is brightly lit which is good for people who wanted to inspect their face before and after a facial session so you will be able to notice the difference, the “before” and “after” session. You will also get to ready yourself once you finish your session because this area is right outside the toilet.
This branch has three different areas inside, they have the general facial salon area, the body treatment and massage area and the pedicure and manicure area. Music is okay. Some people prefer background music of birds tweeting in the air, waterfalls, sea shore but I prefer instrumental romantic music although there are times that some forest music is a-okay for a change. During this visit, relaxing flutes and instrumental romantic music were being played. Because I love these types of music I personally have a collection of the same music at home. Toilet is a common toilet for male and female, its clean and dry and colored peach just like their uniform. The shower area also is okay. Only massage and body treatment clients will have access to the shower area because it’s in another part of the facial spa. There is only one massage room located at the farthermost right side room (this is the only room that does not have any network signal for mobile phones). Other rooms are allocated for body treatments, microdermabrasion, etc. The general facial salon area has facial beds that are dikit-dikit (placed directly beside each other). With seven beds on each side for this branch they have 28 facial beds all in all. If you do not mind getting beside a total stranger, then this facial salon might be for you but if you value privacy over all the other services, then this facial salon is not for you. Some facial lights are working and some are not. The general ambiance is Asian with tapestries of Thai. There are large mirrors on each side and little busts of Buddha framed in one corner. There are four large white chandeliers on top which are turned off to set a relaxing tone. The Thai-inspired massage room although cozy is very small (in my estimate the working/ massage area is just 3-4 square meters which is less than the required minimum size required by law because at least 5 square meters should be allocated for the massage space) The room has a corner where you can see some decors like the elephant framed décor, several small plastic plants in glass, stones and their selection of oil. Unfortunately for my visit, Edna (my massage therapist) has only two types of oil available, I chose the one with a peppermint smell. We will talk more about my massage session afterwards.

Let is first talk about my facial session. Here is my secret, there are three parts in a facial that I am most excited about: the shoulder and back massage is the first (or any type of massage during the facial session, if there is one), the second is the facial massage (how they execute the techniques in a facial therapy) and the third is the application of a high frequency machine or what is commonly termed as laser. For this session, I have had a facial and a body massage afterwards. For my facial, I was taken cared of by Love because Connie was not yet on duty and Pie already has a client. As usual, I was ushered to a corner and instructed to lie down after I washed my face. Then came the first part of this facial therapy and second among my favorite part of a facial: the facial massage. The 5-10 minute facial massage consists of applying a facial cleanser on your face and massaging it with strokes and techniques that will enhance the tonicity of facial muscles as well as set the client in a mood for a relaxing facial. The only thing I do not like is that they do not include neck cleaning. Love’s pace and movements are very similar to Connie but Love is a lot faster than Connie. It should be slower because when facial massage is executed fast, it is less relaxing than that of slower movements. Then came the steam time, the part which I am not really very excited about--- okay, okay, I am being “kinder” with my words but as I have always stressed, I do not like the steam portion even though I know that it will open my pores and help in releasing toxins….but with all these benefits….hindi ko talaga gusto ang steam time. I hate this part. Then, they will apply vacuum to take away the debris of the facial cleanser as well as some dirt which is still lodged on the skin. They will wipe the remaining cleanser and start with the extraction part. Ito yung pinaka masakit (most painful) na portion and the longest one at that. What I love about this portion is that they take the time para isa-isahin ang pag-alis ng zits and zats ng aking mukha (they take the time to remove the dirt, white heads, and black heads on my face). In my experience, the length of extraction will depend on the severity of your skin condition and the tolerance to pain of the client. Most of the time they spend 45 minutes to an hour to clean my face. What I also like about this branch is that when I am in a hurry, they will also adjust the time and shorten the treatment session. Then came the hot compress where they will apply a hot towel and then the high frequency machine (commonly termed as LASER) applied on top of a cloth.

Let us now talk about the massage proper, I like that Edna (the massage therapist assigned to me that time) started with a slow and steady movement of her hands but her hands were cold (mainly because the area is air conditioned. When I was still a practicing massage therapist when this happens what I normally do was wash my hands with hot water or wipe hot compress to or place my hands on top of the sauna coals whichever is possible to make my hands warm before my massage session with a client ). I also noticed that her tapping for both legs lasted for more than two minutes which is longer than usual. I told her to focus on the knots on my shoulder and luckily she did. I like that she focused on my shoulders too because those are my sore spots. There are only two things I did not like about my massage session, she served me with cold water right after my massage (which I think she should not have because she should have served me a warm or hot beverage instead) and she was not able to finish her massage on my legs (in a supine position) because we ran out of time. When the timer alarmed she immediately stopped the session. The thing that I watch the most on how they perform is the back massage. In my personal opinion, if you have done a good back rub/ massage, you will get a satisfied client.

As usual, I left both Edna and Love a Php 100.00 ($2.00) each as gratuity for their service.

For this visit, I would give 85% for my facial and 81% for my massage. Clearly, the forte of Let’s Face It! is facial therapies not massage therapies but there were several times that Connie mentioned to me that I should try their sister company which offers more on massage and bodyworks, it’s called Relaxasi. Unfortunately, the nearest branch is located at SM City North EDSA. Maybe one of these days, I will.
